There was a palpable sense of gratitude and joy as All Saints Blackbutt South Parish gathered to mark 20 years as one parish community. Beneath clear skies and bright sunshine, parishioners, families and friends came together in large numbers to celebrate a shared history shaped by faith, service and belonging.

The occasion also marked significant milestones across the Parish’s worshipping communities: 126 years of St Columba’s, Adamstown; 120 years of St Kevin’s, Cardiff; and 50 years of St Philip’s, Kotara. Together, these anniversaries tell a story of generations of people who have prayed, served and built strong communities of faith.

The celebrations began with Mass led by Bishop Michael Kennedy, bringing people of all ages together in a spirit of thanksgiving. Students, staff and families from Trinity Catholic College were an important part of the day, with student leaders warmly welcoming guests, serving at the altar, assisting with hospitality and helping lead the music.

Behind the scenes, countless volunteers and parishioners worked tirelessly to bring Fr Joseph Figurado’s vision for the celebration to life. Their generosity, dedication and willingness to serve reflected the very spirit that has sustained these communities for more than a century.

The day was made even more special as Fr Joseph also marked 20 years of ministry in the Diocese. While anniversaries provide an opportunity to honour the past, they are also a chance to celebrate the people who continue to shape the future.

Thriving churches are built on more than bricks and mortar. They are sustained by communities of people who pray together, support one another through life’s joys and challenges, volunteer their time and talents, and pass on the faith to future generations. It is these relationships, grounded in a shared faith and a spirit of service, that give parish communities their strength and vitality. Strong communities create welcoming parishes, nurture new generations and ensure the Church remains a living presence in people’s lives.

The celebration was a fitting reminder that the story of All Saints Blackbutt South Parish is not simply one of buildings or anniversaries, but of people. For 20 years as one parish, and for well over a century across its individual communities, generations have contributed to a living faith that continues to flourish. As the community looked back with gratitude, it also looked forward with confidence, knowing that strong and connected communities remain the foundation of a vibrant Church.
