Welcome to Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart Cathedral in Hamilton is the ‘mother-Church’ of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and also serves as one of the Churches within the Parish of St Benedict’s Inner Newcastle.
Originally built as the Parish Church of Hamilton and consecrated in 1930, Sacred Heart has stood as a testament to the ongoing faith and dedication of the Catholic community in Newcastle.
Following the earthquake of 1989 in which St John’s Pro-Cathedral in Maitland sustained significant damage, Bishop Leo Clarke relocated his Cathedra in 1996 from the Pro-Cathedral in Maitland to Sacred Heart Church in Hamilton, thus establishing Sacred Heart as his new Cathedral.
Adorning the main entrance is a life-size marble statue of the Saviour with outstretched arms and the inscription, “Venite Ad Me Omnes” Come to me, serving as an invitation of welcome to all who pass by to enter into the presence of Christ, the Saviour.
