Research & Archives

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Archives collect, preserve, and manage historical records.

Our archives

The role of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Archives is to collect, preserve and manage the records generated by the successive Catholic Bishops of Maitland-Newcastle. These records can include correspondence relating to seven previous Bishops from the early 1800s, parish histories, Ecclesiastical memorabilia, photographs, the Newcastle and Maitland Catholic Sentinel newspapers and scrapbooks relating to various parishes, priests, religious groups and events in the life of the diocese.

Research by Archivist

Documentation from the diocesan Archives may be requested by bona fide researchers, within the restraints of privacy. Email [email protected] for more information.

Family History

The Diocesan Archives is not responsible for storing any Sacramental Registers (which are often used for family history projects). If you require information concerning Baptisms, Marriages or Funerals, please contact your individual parish, based on the geographical area of your search.

You can view the full list of parishes within the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle on our Parishes page.

The Sentinel

Archives of The Sentinel, a Maitland-Newcastle periodical published monthly 1931-68, are available now online. All 5,600 pages were digitised last October 2017 by the National Library, Canberra, and can be accessed online via Trove.
