Religious Congregations

Religious Congregations are groups of men or women who have chosen to express their Christian commitment by living in community and taking lifelong vows - usually vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.

Catholic Life Vocation

These men and women commit their lives to serving God and the Church through prayer and sacrifice. They dedicate themselves to acts of service, fostering love and support for all they encounter.

Governed by their own constitutions, with the approval of the Pope (or local bishop), these congregations operate with the diocese with the Bishop’s consent.

In the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, there are currently seven religious congregations operating. These religious congregations offer a range of pastoral, social welfare, educational, aged care and health services for people in our community.

Religious congregations currently serving within the diocese:

  • Discalced Carmelite Sisters of Mary and Joseph (OCD)
  • Dominican Sisters of Eastern Australia and the Solomon Islands (OP)
  • Sisters of Mercy (RSM)
  • Sisters of St Joseph Lochinvar (rsj)
  • Sisters of the Good Samaritan (SGS)
  • Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth (CSFN)
  • Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM)
