Bishop Michael Kennedy has joined Caritas Australia CEO Kirsten Sayers on a visit to Timor-Leste, meeting with Church, community and government leaders, including Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and Cardinal Virgílio do Carmo da Silva.

The visit has focused on strengthening the longstanding partnership between Caritas Australia and the people of Timor-Leste, while highlighting local efforts to address poverty, climate change, food security and disaster resilience.

Bishop Michael and Ms Sayers spent time with farmers, women’s groups and community leaders involved in Caritas-supported programs, witnessing firsthand the determination and resilience of communities working to build a stronger future.

As a Director of the Caritas Australia Board, Bishop Michael’s visit reflects the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle’s ongoing commitment to supporting the work of Caritas and accompanying communities across the region.

“The people of Timor-Leste continue to show extraordinary resilience in the face of many challenges,” said Kirsten Sayers.

“We have been inspired by communities who are adapting to climate change, strengthening livelihoods and creating opportunities for their families despite considerable challenges. Our role is to walk alongside them as partners, listening and supporting locally led solutions.”

Reflecting on the visit, Bishop Michael said the faith and hope of the Timorese people left a lasting impression.

“The Church in Timor-Leste is a source of great hope. We have witnessed communities that continue to face hardship with courage, dignity and an unwavering trust in God’s presence.

“Encountering families, community leaders and Church leaders has reminded us that true development is not simply about projects or infrastructure. It is about people, relationships and the conviction that every person is created in the image of God and deserves the opportunity to flourish.”

The visit also highlighted the growing role of Caritas Timor-Leste, now in its second year as the national coordinating body for the Church’s humanitarian and development work, supporting local communities to respond to some of the country’s most pressing challenges through locally led solutions.

Through partnerships built on faith, solidarity and local leadership, Caritas Australia continues to walk alongside the people of Timor-Leste as they strengthen communities, build resilience and create opportunities for future generations.
