By Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Media Releases and Statements

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle welcomes the Geographical Names Board’s in-principle approval to rename Kennedy Creek as Maraikaan Creek, and expresses its full support for this proposal.

The Diocese recognises that names carry significance and that it is important for public places to reflect values that promote respect, cultural understanding and community wellbeing. We acknowledge the deep and enduring harm caused by historical child sexual abuse within the Catholic Diocese, and we recognise that references to individuals associated with this history can cause distress and pain for survivors and their families.

The name Maraikaan, reflecting Awabakal language and cultural heritage, offers a more appropriate and respectful way to honour the land and the community it flows through.

The Diocese places on record its strong support for the renaming and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to listening to survivors and responding meaningfully to their concerns.
