Ten years ago, CatholicCare Hunter-Manning was given an incredible opportunity.

The Taree Community Kitchen was looking for a new operator, so the team stepped in and took over management of the facility.

The kitchen had already been serving the community for 30 years, and CatholicCare was proud to carry forward its legacy of compassion, connection, and care.

Since then, the Kitchen has gone from strength to strength, thanks to the dedication of staff, a strong team of volunteers and consistent community support.

“The generosity of our donors and the commitment of our volunteers are the heart of our Community Kitchens. Their support changes local lives every single day,” said Monique Davison, CatholicCare Executive Manager-Community Services.

“Reaching the 10-year milestone is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together to support one another.”

Today, CatholicCare operates five Community Kitchens across the Hunter and Manning regions. Together, they serve thousands of meals each year to people experiencing hardship, loneliness, or simply looking for a sense of belonging.

At the heart of the Taree Kitchen are its volunteers  the friendly faces who cook, serve, and share stories with visitors each week. Their compassion and consistency ensure that every person who comes through the door is met with dignity and respect.

The impact is often felt far beyond a single meal. Many guests use the service as a stepping stone to reconnect with community or seek other forms of support. Local partnerships also play a vital role, with nearby businesses and schools regularly donating food, funds, and time to help sustain the service.

“Our Community Kitchens are about more than a nutritious meal,” Monique said. “They’re about restoring hope, building relationships, and showing people that they matter.”

“We provide a place of welcome and connection for everyone who walks through its doors,” she said.

As the Taree Community Kitchen celebrates this milestone, CatholicCare extends heartfelt thanks to all who have supported its journey  from the volunteers who give their time so generously, to the donors and community partners who make it possible.

If you would like to help us continue to support the community, please consider donating or volunteering at one of our Community Kitchens.
