On Saturday 16 May, the Diocese hosted a special Vocations “Come and See” Retreat Day at the Hunter Wetlands Centre, Shortland, offering participants an opportunity to step away from the business of everyday life and prayerfully reflect on God’s call.

Set within the peaceful surrounds of the Hunter Wetlands, the retreat brought together presenters and speakers from a range of vocational backgrounds to share stories of faith, discernment and service. Throughout the day, participants reflected on Scripture, engaged in personal prayer and group discussion, and explored practical tools for discernment in a welcoming and Spirit-filled environment.

A key feature of the retreat was the opportunity for participants to connect with others who are also seeking to better understand where God may be calling them in life, whether that be through ministry, family life, professional service or other pathways of vocation.

A highlight of the day was a session from nationally recognised presenter Simon Carrington on Ignatian discernment, equipping participants with practical tools to assist in listening and responding to God’s call with greater clarity.

Fr Tony Potts said the retreat was designed to create space for people to pause and consider how God may be working in their lives. “In the business of life, it can be difficult to make time to truly listen to where God may be calling us. The retreat was an invitation to slow down and reflect on the ways God continues to call each of us through our gifts, experiences and relationships,” Fr Tony said.

The retreat concluded with the celebration of Mass led by Michael Kennedy, providing a prayerful and fitting end to a day centred on listening to God’s call and responding with faith and courage.
