The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle joins the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. A shepherd of compassion and humility, he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to social justice, his advocacy for the poor, and his call for a Church of mercy.

Bishop Michael Kennedy said Pope Francis was a true testament to living the Gospel.

“He showed us that to truly know Christ, we must connect with and care for one another. He led by example, choosing dialogue over division and love over fear,” Bishop Kennedy said.

“Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis encouraged people of faith to act. He urged the world to care for the marginalised, protect our common home, and to build a Church that reaches outward rather than turning inward.

“We give thanks to Pope Francis for his impact and pray for the eternal repose of his soul. His legacy will live on, not only in remembrance but in action.”

The Diocese will gather for a Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 6:30pm on Monday, 28 April, to celebrate and mourn in prayer. Further details will be available later today on the Diocesan website.
