Sometimes, the problems of our world seem too big.

In the past few years, there has been growing concern in the community about housing affordability, social isolation, and access to aged-care services.

Complex problems like this often require creative solutions and I am excited to have found an organisation who is helping to address the above.

Recently, I sat down with Nissa Phillips of Hunter Homeshare to learn more about a life-changing idea taking root in our local area, and to explore how our Catholic communities might embrace this opportunity.

So, what is ‘Homeshare’?

“Hunter Homeshare is a community-based initiative that connects people in need of safe, secure, and affordable housing with compassionate homeowners who are open to sharing both their home and their lives,” Nissa said.

Homeshare is not a new idea. In fact, models of homeshare have been around since the 1970s. However, as Nissa tells me, it is something new for Newcastle and the Hunter. The current challenges facing our community are an opportunity to reimagine the way we live together.

“At its heart, homeshare is a simple but powerful arrangement: a homeowner – often an older person – offers accommodation to a home seeker in exchange for companionship and help with light household tasks,” Nissa explained.

“This arrangement supports ageing in place, fosters intergenerational relationships, and creates a sense of belonging.”

When I asked Nissa what this might look like in practice, she directed me to the story of Majorie and Sabrina that recently appeared on A Current Affair:

Like the story above, Nissa assures me that Homeshare arrangements are supported by rigorous safeguarding procedures. Their mission is to provide dignified housing.”

“What we are after is a win-win situation where there’s a good match between people who can live well together,” Nissa said.

This is an invitation for our communities to join the conversation – and maybe more!
