Yesterday’s arrival of the major relic of St Carlo Acutis marked the beginning of a significant visit to the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, offering the faithful an opportunity to encounter and reflect on the life of one of the Church’s newest saints.

As the day gave way to the evening, Sacred Heart Cathedral filled with parishioners, families, students, clergy and visitors from across the Diocese. They had gathered not only to honour St Carlo, but also to encounter the witness of a young saint whose devotion to Christ continues to inspire Catholics around the world.

Bishop Michael Kennedy led Mass, reflecting on Carlo’s journey to sainthood and the qualities that made his witness so compelling. Drawing on Carlo’s deep love of the Eucharist, his commitment to prayer and his use of technology to share the Gospel, Bishop Michael encouraged those present to consider how they too might live their faith with authenticity, purpose and trust in God.

He reminded the congregation that sainthood is not just reserved for extraordinary people, but is the universal call of every Christian, with Carlo’s life demonstrating how holiness can be lived in ordinary ways through a daily relationship with Christ.

Following Mass, a spirit of reverence settled over the Cathedral as people came forward to venerate the relic. People of all ages took time for prayer, reflection and contemplation.

Saint Carlo’s reception into the Diocese serves as a powerful reminder that holiness is not reserved for extraordinary people or distant centuries. Through his witness, those gathered were invited to and to recognise that a life centred on Christ, lived with sincerity, faith and joy, remains relevant in every age.

 

Carlo’s story resonates with so many because it is rooted in ordinary life. Surrounded by technology, and the everyday experiences of adolescence, he remained deeply committed to prayer, the Eucharist and serving others. His example demonstrates that faith can be lived authentically in the modern world and continues to inspire young people to place Christ at the centre of their lives.
