Prayers for Pope Leo XIV
Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle joins worldwide prayers as Pope Leo recovers from surgery.

The Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle joins Catholics around the world in holding Pope Leo XIV in prayer following surgery on Tuesday 13 October to remove a cancerous nodule from his right lung. Recent updates from his medical team have been encouraging, with doctors reporting that his recovery is progressing as expected. He has begun respiratory physiotherapy and is walking independently around his hospital room.
The Holy Father has also resumed some of his work while in hospital, meeting with senior Vatican officials and continuing to celebrate Mass in a specially prepared room in hospital. Doctors have reported good recovery of the operated lung, with post-operative tests remaining within normal levels.
The Pope’s illness has prompted an outpouring of prayer and support from across the world, including the bishops of Australia. On behalf of Australia’s bishops, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, wrote to assure the Holy Father of the prayers and support of the Catholic community in Australia.
“The bishops of Australia, together with our people, are united in our concern for you and in our desire to accompany you with our prayerful support as you confront the challenges ahead following your recent surgery,” said Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB in his letter to Pope Leo XIV.
Reflecting on the experience shared by many families facing illness, Archbishop Costelloe expressed the hope that God would bless the Holy Father with courage, hope and healing. He also entrusted Pope Leo to the care of Mary Help of Christians, asking that he may feel the support of her prayers and presence in the weeks ahead.
Catholics across the Diocese are invited to continue holding Pope Leo in their prayers as he journeys towards recovery.
