Bishops AppealWe stand with our community, to serve and support at this difficult time.
In my time as Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, I have never seen our Diocese come together quite like this.
The response to the Manning floods has revealed not only the strength of our community, but also the depth of compassion and connection that exists across our schools, parishes and ministries.
Across different generations and demographics, you turned up, whether it was through prayer, cooking, packing, donating or simply standing alongside those in need.
I want to especially acknowledge the many staff who gave so generously of their time, through gathering and transporting donations, promoting the appeal, and helping coordinate our response behind the scenes. Your efforts made a real difference.
I also want to thank our Catholic Community Fund, who not only helped us get the appeal off the ground but generously matched donations and supported us every step of the way. Their ongoing commitment to our mission has been exceptional.
I have been deeply moved by the response, and I feel immensely grateful to serve a Diocese such as this.
Throughout the course of this ordeal, we have been speaking to people on the ground and in our communities. This video is a compilation of those conversations. It captures the devastation, but also the resilience and camaraderie that emerged in its wake.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part, no matter how small. This video is a tribute to you.
And to our brothers and sisters in the Manning and affected regions, please know we are thinking of you, praying for you and walking with you every step of the way.
God bless,
Bishop Michael Kennedy
Donations are still climbing. If you would like to donate, please click the link below.
Bishops AppealYour generous donation has been directed to local Catholic parishes, who are best placed to respond to the needs of their communities. These funds are being used to provide practical, immediate support – from food and clothing to livelihood tools and essential household items – ensuring help reaches those who need it most, when they need it most.
Sister Gaye Lennon is working in Taree alongside the local community to identify immediate and emerging needs, ensuring funds are directed to where they’ll make the greatest impact.
Her presence is helping to shape a coordinated, compassionate response that reflects the voices and priorities of those most affected.
If you or someone you know needs support, help is available. You can contact Sister Gaye Lennon at [email protected] or visit your local Parish for assistance.
Sister Gaye is also available to offer pastoral care and is there to listen to anyone seeking emotional or spiritual support.
Whether you’re in need of practical help or someone to talk to, the Diocese will walk alongside you and connect you with the support you need.
We understand this may be a deeply distressing time, and you don’t have to face it alone. Support is available. The Rosewood Centre is available for professional counselling and mental health services. For a more extensive list of resources, click here.
