What do Catholics believe?

At the core of the Catholic faith is the belief in one God, who exists in three distinct yet inseparable persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.

Learn Formation

This triune God is the creator and sustainer of the universe and is characterised by infinite love, mercy and justice. God desires to extend this communion to us and yearns to be in relationship with us. All human beings are created in God’s image, and we are uniquely known and loved by him.

Jesus is the Son. He became human to reveal God’s love and bring us to wholeness and fullness of life through his life, death and resurrection (rising from the dead). The Holy Spirit is likened to the breath of God. The Spirit, given to us in baptism, enlivens, animates and dwells in our hearts.

Despite our own unique attributes, stories and histories, we are united by our faith.

Catholics profess the Apostles or Nicene creed at every Sunday Mass to affirm our belief in these essential truths and create a sense of unity and shared purpose amongst a larger body of believers. The Creed serves as a reminder of the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation. By professing our faith, Catholics renew our commitment to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Another key source for understanding what Catholics believe is the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). The CCC contains a comprehensive summary of Catholic doctrine, morals, and worship. It was promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1992 and is considered the official teaching of the Catholic Church.

Catholicism is steeped in 2,000 years of faith and devotion to Jesus Christ and His message of love and salvation for all people.

Want to learn more about what Catholics believe? There are so many opportunities to receive what we call ‘formation’. Formation is an intentional, ongoing, and reflective process that focuses on the growth of individuals and communities from their lived experiences. You can join with others to grow in your faith at your local Parish or by accessing a Diocesan program led by the Mission & Evangelisation team. Check the events page to find a program or gathering near you. If you are interested in learning more, contact us.
