Netflix series Adolescence and the use of language
“While much of young people’s language is harmless social play, certain communication patterns or slang can be associated with dangerous or exploitative situations. Both peer and adult perpetrators may use coded language to manipulate or conceal illicit activities involving young people.”

Language plays a crucial role in shaping who we are, how we relate to others, and how we view the world. For children, the way they use language constantly changes, whether it’s through the creative shortcuts of texts and emojis or the shifting slang within their peer groups. Studying how children express themselves goes beyond language analysis; it offers a window into their social lives and can help identify potential risks in their environments. (Martin, 2025)
It is just as important to consider the language professionals (such as teachers, social workers, and police) use when communicating with or about children. Words that may seem harmless can carry labels or biases that shape how children perceive themselves and affect the way society responds to them (Martin, 2025).
Andrew Martin, Director of Safeguarding Network, UK considers the role of language in the Netflix series Adolescence and how language may be interpreted in contexts such as exploitation, gangs, or the “manosphere” subculture (ACSL, 2025).
The article looks more closely at why it is important to recognise that language is always changing and never entirely neutral, with children often leading these changes. Despite this, language can provide common ground and serve as a bridge between people rather than dividing them (ACSL, 2025).
