Watch: What happens next?
24 April, 2025People from across the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle filled the cathedral to offer prayers for the repose of the Pope’s soul and give thanks for his extraordinary life of service.
It formed part of the global outpouring of grief and gratitude for Pope
Francis, who touched countless lives through his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel.
In his homily, Bishop Michael Kennedy reflected on Pope Francis’ faith-filled life and encouraged everyone to pray for him as he journeys into eternity.
“I think Pope Francis will be remembered for calling us back to the basics,” he said.
“Living the joy of the Gospel; trusting in God’s mercy; listening to each other; having hope for the future; caring for one another and for our common home; and being a Church that is focused on sharing the Gospel of Christ with the world rather than on our own self-preservation.
“But, perhaps most of all, for his genuine and humble love of God and neighbour; his unwavering commitment to justice, particularly when it came to advocating for the poor and marginalised; and his insistence that we be a Church of mercy and service.”
Bishop Michael was overwhelmed by the community’s outpouring of love and attendance at the event.
“Tonight, we gathered not only to mourn the passing of Pope Francis, but to give thanks for his life and witness. His spirit of compassion and mercy was deeply felt among us,” he said.
“It was heartening to see so many come together in prayer, gratitude, and hope. The unity we experienced tonight speaks to the love and respect Pope Francis inspired in people of faith within our region and around the world.
“Pope Francis reminded us that faith is lived through love, action, and care for one another. My hope is that all who gathered this evening left feeling renewed in their commitment to live the Gospel each day.
“While we continue to mourn the loss of our shepherd, we take great comfort in the enduring legacy he leaves behind.”
