What we do

Parishes are at the centre of the mission and life of the Diocese.

The purpose of the Mission & Evangelisation team is to provide Diocese-wide leadership in accompaniment and resourcing for Catholic formation, training, and encounter.

The team strives to inspire and support our Bishop’s articulation for parishes to:

  • Thrive in liturgy, worship and prayer
  • Engage in genuine faith formation
  • Seek opportunities for mission in word and deeds.

The team features experts in formation, youth ministry, outreach, worship, children’s ministry, SRE, participation, and rural ministry to support and journey alongside our parishes—building networks of local people equipped to serve their community and beyond.

Our Diocese is also proud to provide spiritual and pastoral support to our community through the provision of Chaplains. Currently, this support extends to John Hunter Hospital, Mission to Seafarers, the University of Newcastle, Cessnock and Shortland Correctional Centres.

The Mission & Evangelisation team liaises with a variety of networks, forums, and support services beyond our core function to parishes. This ensures God’s mission is even richer in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. This includes, but is not limited to, Caritas, Catholic Mission, migrant chaplaincies, the LGBTQIA+ Forum, ecumenical endeavours, natural family planning, and the Hunter Community Alliance.

We advocate for, raise awareness, and resource initiatives of our Diocesan Liturgical Committee and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Committee. We also act on behalf of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference’s national statements, initiatives and participation at gatherings.

Reach out for Pastoral Council Support, Parish Team Formation, Leadership Support, Community Engagement and assistance in identifying and responding to emerging needs.

We also manage the Diocesan Resource Centre – a treasure trove of Catholic resources for all.
