Statement from Bishop Bill Wright in support of Bishop Greg Thompson (1)
‘This week Bishop Greg Thompson made the brave decision to speak out about past abuse he had suffered as a young man, perpetrated by a member of Clergy. I know this is not a decision which Bishop Greg has taken lightly, nor one that was easy to reach.
I place my full and unwavering support behind Bishop Greg as a survivor of abuse, and as a fellow faith leader in our region. By sharing his story, I am hopeful Bishop Greg will inspire those who may be afraid to speak out to find their voice – and in turn, begin their own healing process.
As I have stated previously, a significant number of victims of abuse are connected to the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, and this is something of which we are deeply conscious. We are committed to supporting victims of abuse and, through our Child Protection Unit, Zimmerman Services, and the assistance and counselling provided through our Healing and Support Team, we will continue that commitment.’
