Jubilee Year 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope

The Holy Door of Saint Peter’s Basilica was opened by Pope Francis on 24 December 2024, marking the beginning of the Jubilee Year.

The occasion marks a time of grace, mercy and conversion, involving prayer, pilgrimage, and sacramental repentance.

As a Diocese, we will officially launch the Jubilee Year with a special event on Sunday 2 March.

Everyone is encouraged to get involved as we celebrate Pope Francis’ theme - Pilgrims of Hope.

Diocesan Launch of the Jubilee Year

8:00am – Pilgrim Prayer at Nobbys Beach (Foreshore Park)

8:15am – Pilgrimage along the Harbourfront (Honeysuckle)

10:00am – Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral

11:00am – Festival in the Cathedral Precinct with the 2025 Launch of  Caritas Australia's Project Compassion Lenten Appeal.

Bishop Michael Kennedy is inviting all communities of the Diocese to come along with their flags and banners as we celebrate and share with the Newcastle CBD the hope we bring to our part of the world.

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Greece, Turkey and Italy

Join us on pilgrimage with Bishop Michael Kennedy.

Open to all staff and parishioners of the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese, join us as we embark on a 18-day pilgrimage tracing the footsteps of St. Paul and other revered saints, visiting pivotal biblical sites across Greece, Turkey, and Italy. From the ancient wonders of Athens and Corinth to the spiritual heights of Meteora and the holy grounds of Ephesus, each location offers a unique opportunity for deep spiritual reflection and connection to our rich Christian story. The pilgrimage culminates in Rome during the Jubilee Year, where pilgrims will experience the grace and blessings of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, uniting in faith and community. This pilgrimage promises to be a deeply enriching experience, fostering a renewed sense of faith and spiritual growth.

Date: Thursday 25 September - Sunday 12 October.
Cost: approximately $10,950 (twin share)
Application: Those interested in applying for this pilgrimage are required to submit their application by Friday 14 March 2025. All applications will be considered on merit to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.

Blessed Carlo Acutis Exhibition

It is with much excitement that we will have an exhibition of Blessed Carlo Acutis visiting the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle from Sunday 2 March (Jubilee Launch) until 1pm Friday 7 March. The exhibition will be set up in the Toohey Room at Cathedral House. The exhibition can take groups of up to 20 at each time and will be open from 9.00am - 5.00pm daily (except Friday). We look forward to seeing everyone there.
