Health & Aged Care

Located within the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle are a number of Catholic aged and health care providers offering quality care, assistance and pastoral support to those entrusted in their care.

The Calvary Mater hospital is located in Waratah and has 95 beds and is supported by an emergency department and intensive care unit. Calvary Mater Newcastle is the Hunter region's major centre for oncology (cancer) services, haematology, clinical toxicology and research.

In April 2011, the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle transferred its aged care services (formerly operated by Catholic Care of the Aged and CatholicCare) to national health and aged care provider - Little Company of Mary Health Care (LCMHC), for operation by Calvary. The combination of CatholicCare's aged care services with the existing services of LCMHC in the Hunter-Manning has produced a unique and extensive network of services covering hospital-based services, respite services, more than 700 residential aged care beds and community aged care to more than 500 older people.

In addition to this, Mercy Nursing Home operates in Singleton and offers 37 high care beds, 7 low care beds and 4 independent living units.

The Hunter Natural Family Planning Centre also operates from within the diocese to assist couples to understand their fertility so that they can aim to achieve or space pregnancy.

NOTE: The aged and health care groups listed in this section are not a direct service of the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Specific queries should be directed to the organisation or group in question. The diocese will endeavour to keep all contact details up-to-date.
